Planning Your Preaching with Purpose: A Pastoral Reflection
One of the most formative resources in shaping my preaching philosophy was Dr. Stephen Rummage’s Planning Your Preaching. It taught me the value of approaching the pulpit with prayerful intention rather than scrambling late in the week for a “Saturday night special.” The Word of God is too weighty—and the souls of the people too precious—for preaching to be rushed, reactive, or haphazard.
Seeking God’s Direction in Advance
Every year, during the late spring and early summer months, I begin prayerfully seeking the Lord about what our preaching calendar should look like for the next year. This isn’t simply logistical planning—it is pastoral discernment. I ask:
What does our church need to hear right now?
Where are we spiritually healthy?
Where do we need strengthening, correction, grounding, or encouragement?
Across church history, we see various approaches to preaching, but I am convinced that expository preaching—opening the text, explaining the text, and applying the text—remains the most faithful and spiritually nourishing approach.
Why I Use a Rotation of Series
During my planning process, I typically identify 8–10 sermon series for the year. These include:
Books of the Bible preached through expositionally
Biblical themes or categories (such as mountains, storms, or prayers in Scripture)
Doctrinal series (such as the Baptist Faith & Message 2000)
A “through the Bible” survey series (one sermon per book)
Seasonal or contextual series tied to church life or community rhythms
Once these are selected, I rotate them every 4–6 weeks, alternating between Sunday morning and evening services.
This method allows our congregation to steadily work through Scripture without becoming bogged down in one book for years at a time. I believe in preaching through books faithfully—but I also want to shepherd our people through the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27). Rotating series helps provide:
Variety without shallowness
Depth without stagnation
Structure without rigidity
This Is What Works for Our Church
I want to be clear: This approach is not a one-size-fits-all model. I’m not suggesting that every pastor should do this or that long-term verse-by-verse studies are unhelpful. Many pastors preach through one book at a time over years—and God uses that richly.
But for the congregation the Lord has called me to serve, this rotation allows me to:
Feed them a balanced, full diet of Scripture.
Keep biblical preaching fresh and engaging.
Address doctrinal grounding, spiritual growth, and real-life application simultaneously.
Maintain momentum and avoid fatigue in long books.
The end goal is simple and biblical:
Provide the church with a healthy, balanced diet of the whole counsel of God.
This Year’s Teaching Focus
For example, this year we are rotating through:
Baptist Faith & Message 2000
Sunday Favorites (Genesis to Revelation—one sermon per book)
Mountains in the Bible
The Gospel of John
Revelation: A Doctrinal Study of End Times
1 Corinthians
Storms in Scripture
Psalms (one at a time)
Annual Theme Emphasis
Seasonal / Holiday / Community Rhythm Messages
On Wednesdays, I’m teaching through the earthly life of Jesus, and once a month we study Ken Sande’s Resolving Everyday Conflict.
Shepherding with Intention
In the end, planning your preaching is not about filling a calendar—it’s about feeding the flock. The goal is not efficiency—it is faithfulness. And the reward is watching God grow His people through His Word.
